A web API is an application programming interface (API) for either a web server or a web browser. It is a web development concept, usually limited to a web application's client-side.
In healthcare, medical devices usually reside in Point-of-Care (PoC) networks which connect to other networks of the health delivery organization (HDO) through gateways.
Medical devices connect to gateways or web servers either through standard-based (e.g. ISO/IEEE 11073) or propriety application programming interfaces (APIs). Medical device systems may also rely on their individual embedded web servers (EWS) which provide endpoints to which a client application can directly connect, commonly through a RESTful API.
